A typical species for the well preserved meadow-steppe grasslands, very sensitive to overgrazing despite its stoloniferous character.

The plant is characteristic for the meadow-steppe grasslands from the cold Sarmatian forest-steppe north from the Black Sea, extending from southern Poland up to Urals. Disjunct isolated populations are encountered in the insular forest-steppes from Moldavia, Transylvania and Pannonia. Totally isolated disjunct populations are found in the Maritime Alps.

An interesting study of genetic variability can be seen here. The finding of this species in the flora of Italy in 1997 is reflected by this article .

Nice pictures of this species from the forest-steppe north from the Black Sea can be seen here, The western most populations of the species are very disjunct, located in the Maritime Alps in both France and Italy. Some images from these populations can be seen here. Populations from the forest-steppe islets from Czech Republic can be seen here .

In south-eastern Romania, southern Moldova and north-eastern Bulgaria this species is replaced by the very closely related Serratula bulgarica Acht, et Stoj.

Transylvanian Plain forest-steppe area near Boju, Cluj county in a remnant stripe of meadow-steppe grasslands on the north-eastern flank of Straja Mare Hill. The species was quite frequently encountered in the area in the 80s ad 90s of the XXth century and became extemely rare due to sheep grazing. June 2012.
